Gozo is an island in the Mediterranean Sea, the second largest island in the Maltese archipelago. It is approximately 7 miles wide by 4 miles top to bottom, with a population of about 30,000. To the north is Sicily, south is Libya, to the west is Algeria and Tunisia, and Greece to the east. It has 3000 hours of sunshine a year.

Gozo has been inhabited for over 5000 years. The Ggantija Temples, near Xaghra, are the oldest free-standing structures on the planet. Ggantija, in Maltese, means 'belonging to the giants'. Gozo is said to be the location of Ogygia, the island in Homer's Odyssey, where the nymph Calypso held Odysseus captive.
