I didn't get here until the end of September, so I couldn't tell you how hot it was in July and August, but today was the hottest day since I've been here for sure. 31° it hit around 2pm. This is the middle of October, in England I'd be looking for my woolly hat and thermal socks by now. The record maximum in Malta I believe for October is 33°, but 31° was plenty. I don't know that it was the heat so much as the humidity, which was up near 80%, so I did as the Gozitans seem to do and stayed indoors for a lie down.
As we cool by evaporation of moisture from our skin, the higher the relative humidity, the less readily heat gets absorbed from our bodies. According to the Heat Index, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_index , 31° at 80% humidity feels like 41°, and I was in danger of heat cramps and heat exhaustion. Gracious. Good job I lay on the sofa in my boxers watching the footy, it's best not to exert oneself too much here I find.
